There are so many myths within the dental world. A large amount of the misconception can be attributed to a lack of available information or educational material, along with false advertising. Social media has also helped spread some of these false ideas about dentistry and orthodontics in particular. Many of these misunderstandings may be preventing you from maintaining your optimal oral health, or from getting the best treatment possible. The following are some of the most common misconceptions about orthodontists and orthodontic treatment.
Myth #1: Orthodontists will only treat challenging and complex cases.
Fact: Orthodontists will treat all cases, from the simplest to the most complex. They have extensive training and knowledge to create the best and most efficient treatment plan. Whether it be the simple movement of a few teeth or a complex case that requires jaw surgery, we love to treat it all.
Myth #2: Orthodontists charge more than general dentists for their treatment.
Fact: The cost of seeing an orthodontist for your treatment will be very similar to what a high-quality general dentist would charge. In fact, it may end up costing you less money in the long run. An orthodontist will come up with a way to treat you quickly and efficiently. Things will be done correctly on the first try, ultimately saving you time and money.
Myth #3: Braces are painful.
Fact: After a short adjustment period with slight soreness (like after you workout and have a sore muscle), you should not experience any discomfort with your braces. Occasionally you may have a wire that pokes a bit or a bracket that rubs your cheek. This discomfort can easily be resolved with a quick trip to our office or a little bit of orthodontic wax.
Myth #4: I will have to be in braces for at least 2 years or more.
Fact: Every treatment plan is very different. Depending on the severity of your treatment, it can take anywhere from a few months to a few years. The best way to determine your treatment plan is to schedule a consultation for an orthodontic evaluation.
Common myths can often be debunked by doing a little bit of your own research. It is easy to just believe anything that pops up on the internet or social media.
