Broken Braces2024-05-09T09:46:22+00:00

Broken or loose braces are generally not considered an urgent problem in most cases. There are times when a loose brace may cause some problems, however, so it is best to call our office when the problem occurs. When a bracket comes off of a tooth, it is still normally attached to the wire with an elastics tie.

This will prevent the bracket from being swallowed, but it may move or spin around on the wire. If this is a problem for the patient, a little wax pressed against the bracket will keep it from moving around.

Loose Band2024-05-09T09:47:46+00:00

When a band (ring around the back teeth) comes loose, the patient is in no immediate harm. However, the band is normally cemented on the tooth with an adhesive that seals the inner portion of the band from saliva and plaque. If the band is left loose for a period of time (3-4 weeks), saliva and bacteria may enter the crevice between the tooth and the band. The result could be a decalcification (white spot) on the tooth surface. It can form rather quickly, causing damage to the enamel, so a phone call to our office is recommended.

Poking Wire2024-05-09T09:48:02+00:00

Many times as the teeth move in the early phase of treatment, the wire used to straighten the teeth has no place to go except out the back of the molar band area. Also, if spaces are being closed or if the bite is being corrected, the wire will begin to get longer at the back of the braces. Fortunately, most times this can be handled at home very simply with some orthodontic wax. It is important to try and dry the area first (with a paper towel), then roll up a piece of wax into a ball. Place the ball of wax into the area of the poking wire. The wax will smooth the area and keep the tissue from getting caught on the end. If wax does not resolve the pain, please contact our office.

Orthodontic Pain & Discomfort2024-05-09T09:48:18+00:00

Pain and discomfort are a normal part of orthodontic treatment. The pain tends to occur about 4-6 hours after the braces are placed or after an adjustment appointment. Over the next day or two, the pain will progressively become worse. Then, after days 3-5, the pain will begin to subside. We recommend over-the-counter pain medication (preferably Tylenol) just prior to and after the adjustment appointments. This allows the medication to already be in the system before the pain begins, improving its effectiveness.

Injuries2024-05-09T09:48:36+00:00

Significant dental injuries while in braces can be traumatic to the patient. Immediate care should be sought from an emergency physician and dentist in these cases. Often the braces have been known to actually prevent loss of teeth since the braces and wires had provided stability.

Lost/Broken Retainers2024-05-09T09:48:52+00:00

There are a number of variables that determine whether this is an urgent situation or not. For example, if the braces had recently been removed, there is a greater chance that the teeth will shift and move if a retainer is not replaced relatively quickly. However, every patient may differ in the potential amount of relapse. If a patient has been out of braces for a long period of time, and the teeth are in a relatively stable position, the chance of significant shifting may be low. Please call our office if your retainer is lost or broken to discuss your options.

Poking Metal Tie2024-05-09T09:49:11+00:00

Occasionally, metal wires are used to tie the archwire to the brackets or bands. Sometimes during eating or brushing, this metal wire tie can accidentally be redirected and start to cause irritation to your lips or cheeks. You can try to push the poky wire back into place by using the end of a pencil eraser.

If that is not possible, you can place wax on the area causing the irritation until you can be seen at our office.

Mouth Sores2024-05-09T09:49:27+00:00

The braces have a tendency to feel rough against the cheeks, lips, and tongue, especially soon after the braces are placed. This will sometimes lead to soreness and cause discomfort. The tissues will develop a callous over time, so this becomes less of a problem while treatment progresses. In the initial stages of treatment, wax can be used in areas that are particularly painful. However, limiting the use of wax will help the patient build up the callous tissues. Temporary pain relief can also be obtained with topical anesthetics (i.e. Orabase®).

Does InBrace Affect Speech?2024-05-09T17:28:13+00:00

The intention behind developing InBrace was for it to be as unobtrusive as possible. Since it will be out of sight behind your teeth, there shouldn’t be a change in the way you speak. As you become adjusted to the device, you should notice an improvement in the way you speak. However, please let us know if you notice any lingering changes to your speech after beginning InBrace treatment.

Are There Food Restrictions With InBrace?2024-05-09T17:28:37+00:00

As with other forms of braces, you are going to have to avoid certain foods in order to protect your appliance and prevent foods from getting stuck in them. This includes foods that are hard, sticky, or chewy. These types of foods tend to get stuck in the braces and loosen or damage the appliance. But there are still plenty of soft, enjoyable foods you can eat.

Am I a Candidate for InBrace?2024-05-09T17:29:31+00:00

People with moderate to severe cases of teeth misalignment and bite issues may benefit greatly from InBrace. It’s also an excellent option for people who desire a straighter, more beautiful smile but don’t want to stand out by wearing metal braces. The easiest way to find out if you qualify for InBrace is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Horsey at our office. To determine whether or not InBrace is the best option for you, he can do an examination and take X-rays. To schedule your free consultation, please contact us right away.

How Long Does InBrace Treatment Take?2024-05-09T17:29:58+00:00

As with most types of braces, the length of treatment will depend on the severity of your situation. Overall, treatment with InBrace typically lasts between 6 and 18 months. Due to some of the improvements, such as the Smartwire, InBrace tends to be more efficient, even in severe cases, than other forms of braces.

Our team can help you troubleshoot and make sure you feel comfortable with the process.

No problem! Your care plan will still include the right visit cadence to keep treatment progressing smoothly.

Does Dental Monitoring replace all office visits?2026-06-21T10:20:06+00:00

No. It can reduce routine check-ins for eligible cases, but you’ll still need in-person appointments for key steps and any hands-on care.

How often will I need to submit scans?2026-06-21T10:20:00+00:00

Your orthodontist sets the schedule based on your treatment plan and where you are in the process.

Is Dental Monitoring available for braces and clear aligners?2026-06-21T10:19:55+00:00

Often, yes, but availability depends on your specific treatment needs and the orthodontist’s recommendation.

What age should a child first visit the orthodontist?2026-06-21T08:25:59+00:00

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children get an evaluation by age 7. Early screening allows us to guide jaw growth and prevent complex issues later. Learn more about our specialized braces for kids program.

Am I too old to get orthodontic treatment?2026-06-21T08:26:18+00:00

Never! A large percentage of our patients are adults seeking a more confident appearance and better bite function. We even feature a dedicated, professional environment at our adult-only Richmond office.

We offer innovative, low-level light therapy devices that can safely accelerate tooth movement by up to 50%. Explore how you can shorten your time in treatment on our OrthoPulse technology page.

How do I care for my clear aligners?2026-06-21T08:34:00+00:00

Aligners are extremely easy to care for. You can clean them using a small amount of transparent, antibacterial soap and gently rinsing them with warm water once a day. Always store them safely in your travel case when eating.

Can I maintain my regular diet during treatment?2026-06-21T08:34:19+00:00

Yes! Because clear aligners are completely removable, you can maintain your regular diet without restrictions. Simply pop them out to eat, brush, and floss normally, then place them back in.

Is Invisalign right for my specific smile goals?2026-06-21T08:34:38+00:00

Invisalign is an excellent solution if you have mild to moderate teeth misalignment. Schedule a free consultation to see if clear aligners fit your clinical needs and local lifestyle.

How many hours a day do I need to wear my aligners?2026-06-21T08:34:59+00:00

Clear aligners are only effective when patients consistently wear them for 20 to 22 hours per day. They should only be removed for eating, drinking anything other than water, and your daily oral hygiene routine.

How often will I need to visit the office for adjustments?2026-06-21T08:35:18+00:00

Unlike traditional alternative options, aligners require fewer in-office visits because there are no physical wires to tighten. You will typically swap out your trays at home every two weeks and visit us every 8 to 10 weeks to monitor progress.

What foods can I eat, and which foods should I avoid with braces?2026-06-21T08:38:41+00:00

The list of foods you can enjoy is long, but you must avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods (like popcorn, ice, and caramel) that can damage brackets. Sticky food particles can also harbor plaque and bacteria, causing damage to your teeth and gums.

What is the best way to care for my braces?2026-06-21T08:38:59+00:00

It is crucial to keep your braces clean. We recommend brushing and flossing at least twice a day, cleaning thoroughly around your brackets, wires, and bands to prevent plaque buildup, tooth decay, and gum disease.

Will my braces hurt when they are put on or adjusted?2026-06-21T08:39:22+00:00

Getting braces put on does not hurt, but you may experience temporary mild soreness or pressure against your cheeks, lips, and tongue for a few days after initial placement or adjustments.

Should I still visit my dentist during my orthodontic treatment?2026-06-21T08:39:42+00:00

Absolutely. Regular dental cleanings and check-ups are more important than ever while wearing braces to ensure your teeth stay clean, healthy, and free of cavities.

What aesthetic alternative options do you offer for traditional metal?2026-06-21T08:40:05+00:00

For a more subtle look, we offer tooth-colored ceramic brackets as well as elegant Iconix champagne gold brackets that blend naturally with your smile. Read more details about these styles directly on our main clear aligners page.

What is a two-phase orthodontic treatment plan for children?2026-06-21T08:48:30+00:00

Two-phase treatment combines jaw structural alignment and tooth straightening. Phase 1 works early to guide jaw growth while baby teeth are present, while Phase 2 aligns permanent teeth once they fully erupt.

How do I know if my child needs early interceptive care?2026-06-21T08:48:53+00:00

Indicators include early or late loss of baby teeth, difficulty chewing, speech impediments, or a visibly crowded bite. A comprehensive screening at our practice can help determine if early intervention is necessary.

Why are retainers necessary after my braces come off?2026-06-21T08:49:16+00:00

Teeth have a natural tendency to shift back to their original positions over time. Wearing a custom retainer protects your structural investment and keeps your beautifully aligned teeth straight for life.

What is orthognathic surgery and when is it required?2026-06-21T08:49:43+00:00

Orthognathic surgery is a specialized surgical procedure used to correct severe skeletal jaw issues in adults that cannot be fixed by braces alone. This treatment improves both oral function and overall facial balance.
