Malocclusion

An orthodontic term used to describe teeth that do not fit together properly. Latin for “bad bite.”

Mandible

The entire lower jaw.

MARA Appliance

MARA is a fixed orthodontic appliance, which cannot be removed by the patient. In this particular orthodontic appliance, the patient’s lower jaw is moved forward so that the top and bottom teeth will be aligned. Usually used to correct an overbite.

Maxilla

The entire upper jaw.

Mixed Dentition

The dental developmental stage in children (approximately ages 6-12) when they have a mix of primary (baby) and permanent teeth.

Mouthguard

A removable device used to protect the teeth and mouth from injury during sporting activities. It is especially important for orthodontic patients to wear a mouthguard.
